Resume Tips

• Eliminate the "Objective" statement — most are very general, state the obvious and waste space.
• Start with a "Summary" that makes an initial hard sell. The summary should demonstrate the skill level and experiences you bring.
• Do not focus on job duties or responsibilities. Instead demonstrate how you made an impact by providing specific examples. Ask yourself:
• How did you perform the job better than others?
• What were the challenges? How did you overcome them? What were the results?
• Did you receive any awards or special recognition?
• Resume Length — No longer than two pages. When deciding what to include, ask yourself, "will this statement help me get the interview?" Don't ramble on with irrelevant or redundant experiences.
• Do not use personal pronouns and articles. There should be no mentions of "I" or "me". Be concise and direct.
• Do not list irrelevant information. Only include your personal interests if they relate to the job. Personal information such as date of birth, marital status, height and weight should not be on the resume.
• Do not end the resume with "References Available On Request". Employers know this and you are wasting space.
• Use modified chronological format. The basic layout is:
• Header: Name, address, phone, email
• Qualification Summary with a strong profile section detailing the scope of your experience and areas of expertise.
• Reverse chronological employment history emphasizing achievements in the past 10 to 15 years.
• Education
• The death of the resume… TYPOS. Spell check, proofread and show your resume to several friends and associates. The resume should be PERFECT!
